8. ADD MORE PAGES
Click the Back to Site Manager link, and the Site
Manager shows you the pages already on your site,
with the option to add more (Figure F). After you
add them, Site Manager lets you jump from one
to the next by clicking its icon. This is how you
navigate through your site while you’re building
or maintaining it.
9. MAINTAIN AN INVENTORY
After a while you can lose track of all the text and
images you’ve uploaded. The list of Uploaded Stuff D
on the right of the Site Manager window contains all
the files you’ve uploaded. Clicking on any file opens
it in a new browser window, and clicking on the trash
icon deletes the file.
10. PUBLISH!
In the Site Manager window, click the checkbox on
any page, then click the Publish button, and that
page goes online. Using the More Actions drop-down menu you can also Tell your friends, Discard
unpublished changes, Unpublish, Duplicate, and
Delete. You can even hide your site, which will cause E
users to receive an error message when they enter
its URL in a browser.
After I created my site, I decided I wanted to have
my own domain name that would link to it. Luckily
brianoheir.com was available so I bought it from the
Yahoo domain service for $10. Afterward, at Yahoo’s
Domain Control Panel ⇒ Forward Domain ⇒ Create
Forward page, any website can be specified as the
destination for any domain name. I then forwarded brianoheir.com to brianoheir.googlepages.com.
My site brianoheir.com has been fun to make, and
I like the idea that it represents me on the internet
with very low maintenance. Of course, nobody visits
it, so I haven’t exactly become a star, and while it F
was the first hit for the search term “Brian O’Heir”
on Google for several weeks, it has now been over-taken by another listing. But, I think it’s OK — that
new listing is “ makezine.com: Brian O’Heir”!
Brian O’Heir is an architect and toy inventor who lives near
Sedona, Ariz.
