Andrew Argyle (Primer) describes himself as “an intelligent biped” who enjoys taking things apart as much as putting them back together. He’s working on making a USB-to-serial/parallel converter, a Geiger counter, and a bead loom for one of his sisters, as well as playing ball hockey, growing exotic cacti from seed, and playing acoustic blues guitar. He did support for the Unix and Linux versions of Word Perfect, was part of the development team for Corel Linux, and has worked for internet startups. He lives in deep suburbia with his wife and stepdaughter.
Gareth Branwyn (Mousey) is something of a reluctant geek (“I’m more of an arty-farty type and a journalist.”). This doesn’t stop him from being endlessly fascinated by all forms of technology, especially their application outside of any intended purpose. He is “Cyborg-in-Chief” of Streettech.com and recently co-wrote a book on TiVo hacking, Leo Laporte’s Guide to TiVo. He lives in Arlington, Virg., with his 17-year-old son, and has been trying to make robots since he was 6 years old, when he told his cousin that he’d made a robot to do his chores.
Erica Sadun (HDTV on Your Mac) has written, co-written, and contributed to almost two dozen books about technology, particularly in the areas of Programming, Digital Video, and Digital Photography. An unrepentant geek, Sadun has never met a gadget she didn’t need. Her checkered past includes run-ins with NeXT, Newton, and a vast myriad of successful and unsuccessful technologies. When not writing, she and her geek husband parent three adorable geeks-in-training, who regard their parents with restrained bemusement.
Tom and Wendell Anderson (This Old Amp and irock Broadcast Boombox) are descended from generations of engineers. Inspired by their dad, they each started engineering at 13, doing electronics piecework in their basement. In their spare time they snowboard, build stuff, play music, program, and design analog circuits. Despite the implication of this bio, they are not twins.
Dan Goldberg (R2-DI Y) thoroughly enjoyed shooting the Star Wars story. A passionate photographer who has worked with MAKE designers on other stories for (gasp!) other magazines, he is also working on a personal project about WWII vets. “I am always photographing something different, which brings fresh new challenges and excitement,” he says. He likes to fly-fish, hike, camp, and just generally enjoy the outdoors every chance he gets. He lives in Chicago with his wife, illustrator Casey Lukatz. He does not like the color purple.
“I still can’t quite believe that I can actually be paid money to draw,” says Damien Scogin (illustrator of MAKE’s DI Y section). With grandparents who taught him drawing techniques at age 5 and a photographer father, Damien has been living and breathing art for his entire life. His favorite fruit is the banana, and he is currently very smitten with dark brown and light green. He lives near beautiful Lake Merritt in Oakland with his girlfriend and spends his spare time dreaming about backpacking trips in California’s High Sierra.
