Diane Gilleland (Otedama) lives a pretty darn crafty life in Portland, Ore., which is every bit as cool a town as you’ve heard it is. When she’s not organizing Church of Craft meetings or producing her craft podcast ( craftypod.com), she’s busy bending the rules of physics in order to make mountains of yarn, beads, fabric, and paper fit into her tiny craft space. She’d give anything for one of those carpetbags Mary Poppins has.

Loud, Hispanic, and funny, Gabriela Hasbun (Raven Hanna photography) is a freelance photographer born and raised in El Salvador. She currently lives in San Francisco with her husband-to-be, Nick, and their cat, Emma. Gabriela has a deep appreciation for scuba diving, watching Six Feet Under, playing tennis, and eating almost any flavor of ice cream (Ciao Bella’s coconut gelato is the current favorite). She recently shot a fat-positive story on women in the Bay Area. Check it out on her website, gabrielahasbun.com.

Stephanie Mallard (Duck Tape iPod Case) is a beginning engineering artist who makes creative things with convenient materials. She lives in Texas with her mom, dad, cat, and dog. Stephanie likes to invent new crafts in her spare time and look for science projects on the web to do for fun. She particularly loves to put her own spin on old projects. And, of course, she loves duck tape for its fix-all reputation and great crafting possibilities.

A true craftoholic, there’s not a craft that Andrea DeHart (Wrap Skirt Project) hasn’t tried at least once. Her mother taught her how to sew at a very young age, and Andrea remembers asking for Barbies, not to play with, but as models for her clothing designs. She lives in San Francisco with her husband, 9-month-old daughter, and two cats. Andrea is also the co-founder of Hell’s Belles, a classic car club for women, and cruises around in her ’ 62 Mercury Comet named Roxie. Now that’s one Crafty Bitch! craftybitch.com

Saul Griffith (Howtoons) has been taking things apart to see how they work since he was a little boy in Australia. He now enjoys putting things together, and is currently working on problems in the field of alternative energy. He recently received a MacArthur “genius” award, although he prefers the term “smarty-pants grant.” All his pants have cargo pockets with holes and he hates wearing shoes. His Howtoons cohort Nick Dragotta eats pens and ink for breakfast and occasionally draws for Marvel Comics. Tucker and Celine are his newest superheroes. howtoons.com

Born and raised on the North Shore of Chicago, Phil Marden (Susie’s Home Ec illustration) spent more than 20 years building his career as an illustrator in New York City. His illustrations have appeared in dozens of newspapers and magazines including Forbes, Fortune, Newsweek, and The New York Times. His work has also been animated for TV and films and was featured in the recent remake of The Stepford Wives. Having relocated to Portland, Ore., Phil now spends more time writing, printmaking, walking his dog, Ivy, and enjoying frequent lattes. He misses New York pizza. philmarden.com

Wendy Seltzer (Craft and Copyright) is a law professor at Northwestern and Harvard who researches intellectual property, privacy, and free expression online. She founded the Chilling Effects Clearinghouse, helping people understand their rights in response to online cease-and-desist threats. Cambridge winters haven’t yet turned her into an icicle, and neither have the chilling effects of legal threats online. She occasionally takes a break from legal code to program, and her favorite tool is her home-built Myth TV. wendy.seltzer.org
