It’s impossible to describe
Selvedge without sounding
like a babbling idiot. With
everything from histories of
linen or tweed or subway car
upholstery to the politics of
Dutch wax resist fabrics to profiles
of contemporary designers, you immediately sense what they
call a “cerebral and sensual addiction to textiles in all forms.”
Turn the way you think about fabric upside down, whether it’s
woven, painted, knit, or felted, art, fashion, or craft. —AO’R

Cathy of California
Mushroom Pincushion
$32

My sewing corner isn’t complete
without my green mushroom pin-
cushion by Cathy of California.
I love the vintage look of the 60s,
and this burlap-covered pincushion
with kitschy ribbon straw flowers is
the perfect décor piece that makes
me happy each time I look at it. It
comes in a variety of vibrant colors,
and with the large styrofoam mush-
room head, you’ll always have plenty
of room for all your pins!
7oz Upholsterer’s
Tack Hammer
$20
hammersource.com
I recently took an upholstery class
and fell head-over-heels for my
teacher’s magnetic tack hammer.
Light and elegant, one end of the
hammer is magnetized to pick up
super-sharp upholstery tacks so you
can stretch fabric with one hand and
tap a tack in with the other. Flip the
hammer around to the heavier face
and finish the job. I immediately
bought one for myself, and now
spend my days dreaming up new
projects to use it for. What doesn’t
need to be tacked down, really?
