From kids making their own Yoda dolls to the hyperbolic crochet sea creatures that graced the Lion Brand Yarn booth, the crafty side of Bay Area Maker Faire 2007 was bustling in the main Expo Hall. The mood was excitement, whether crafters were participating in the many demos and workshops, or shopping for handmade goods at Bazaar Bizarre.
The CRAFT booth, with its stunning backdrop of Wende Stitt’s three-panel Día de los Muertos quilt, was Grand Central for the crafty demos that covered such topics as silk-screening, Gocco printing, crochet, jewelry making, yarn spinning, and sewing. Recycling and green themes ran strong with sustainable fabrics from Ambatalia and popular demos on how to knit T-shirt rugs and refashion thrift-store knits.
The Needle Felting Playground in the CRAFT Corner was the ultimate lounge area, with a constant swarm of people young and old, poking away at their roving while creating such delights as bunnies, fruit, and flowers. All in all, crafters were zooming around trying to soak in all they could before the doors finally closed and Maker Faire became just a warm, fuzzy, and crafty memory.
